In a thrilling opening match of the Club World Cup, Austrian football club Salzburg celebrated a triumphant start with a 2-1 victory over Mexico's CF Pachuca. The match took place in Cincinnati, Ohio, and was marked by a significant weather delay due to a severe thunderstorm.
Salzburg, the reigning Austrian Bundesliga runners-up, took the lead just before halftime when Oscar Gloukh scored with a well-placed long-range shot in the 42nd minute. However, the game faced a lengthy interruption of over an hour after the 54th minute, when the referee halted play due to the dangerous weather conditions.
Once the match resumed, Pachuca equalized shortly after the restart through Bryan Gonzalez, who converted a direct free kick in the 56th minute. Despite the setback, Salzburg regained their advantage with a header from substitute Karim Onisiwo in the 76th minute, sealing the win for the Austrian side.
During the match, Salzburg's defense saw a significant overhaul, with new players such as Stefan Lainer and Frans Krätzig stepping into key roles in the backline. Young goalkeeper Christian Zawieschitzky made his official debut, impressively saving several attempts from Pachuca's forwards, including veteran striker Salomon Rondon.
Despite early pressure from Pachuca, who created several dangerous chances, it was Salzburg who struck first. Gloukh's goal came after a clever setup by Sulzbacher, demonstrating the team's capability to capitalize on opportunities. The match took place in front of a sparse crowd of 5,282 at the TQL Stadium, creating a unique atmosphere.
In a parallel match, Real Madrid, one of the tournament favorites, managed only a 1-1 draw against Saudi club Al Hilal, marking a challenging start for new coach Xabi Alonso. Salzburg now looks ahead to their next match against Al Hilal, scheduled for Monday night in Washington, before facing Real Madrid in their final group stage match.
As the Club World Cup progresses, the performances of Salzburg's newly structured defense and their ability to adapt under pressure will be critical in their quest for advancement to the knockout stages of the tournament.
