Rapid Vienna's ongoing challenges in the Austrian Bundesliga continued as the team suffered another setback, this time a 2-1 home defeat to SV Ried. The result marked Ried's first-ever league victory at Rapid's home ground, further intensifying the scrutiny on the Vienna club's performance and management.
Despite a promising start with a well-taken goal from Louis Schaub that put Rapid ahead, the team was unable to capitalize on its early advantage. Defensive lapses allowed Ried to equalize before halftime, and a costly mistake early in the second half led to a penalty, which Philipp Pomer converted, sealing Ried's historic win.
The match was played in front of 13,537 spectators, the lowest attendance of the season. The subdued atmosphere reflected growing dissatisfaction among Rapid supporters, many of whom expressed their frustration through prolonged whistles and jeers during the match. The home side maintained possession and created opportunities but struggled to find the net for a second time, with Romeo Amanes coming closest when his shot struck the post.
Rapid's interim coach, Stefan Kulovits, acknowledged the team's predicament, emphasizing the need for a turnaround to regain both form and fan support. The club's recent attempts to improve morale, such as team-building activities, have yet to produce positive results on the pitch. Over the last six competitive fixtures, Rapid has collected only one point, losing three consecutive league matches. This decline has pushed the club into a precarious position as the season approaches its critical phase.
With just six rounds remaining before the end of the regular season, Rapid now faces an uphill battle to secure a place in the championship round. The defeat to Ried has left the team only marginally ahead of their opponents in the league standings, a significant change from earlier in the season when Rapid was at the top of the table. The club also faces challenging away matches and a critical Conference League fixture against Nikosia, where they hope to provide some respite for their fan base with a positive result.
The ongoing uncertainty regarding the permanent coaching position adds to the club's instability. Kulovits, currently serving as a temporary solution following the departure of Peter Stöger, is under pressure to deliver immediate results if he is to be considered for the role long-term. The club has indicated that a decision regarding a new permanent head coach is expected ahead of the winter break.
On the other side, SV Ried celebrated a landmark achievement. Despite missing their top scorer, Kingstone Mutandwa, the team executed a disciplined game plan and left the Allianz Stadion with three points for the first time in their Bundesliga history. The result moves Ried within touching distance of the league's top six, keeping their hopes alive for a place in the championship group.
As Rapid Vienna contends with mounting pressure from both their supporters and their league position, the coming fixtures will be crucial in determining the club's trajectory for the remainder of the season. The need for a positive result is paramount, both to restore confidence within the team and to ease growing tensions among the fanbase.
