Gipsy Kings: "Music Is a Natural Way of Life"

A significant engineering milestone has been reached in the ongoing expansion of the West railway line between Linz and Wels, as a new railway bridge has been maneuvered into place over the Welser Motorway (A25) between Wels and Marchtrenk. This bridge installation is a crucial component of a broader infrastructure initiative aimed at enhancing the capacity and efficiency of one of Austria's most vital rail corridors.
The newly positioned structure is engineered to accommodate the future third and fourth tracks of the high-speed railway segment. Once the planned expansion is complete, the rail section is set to operate with four tracks, supporting increased passenger and freight traffic and contributing to sustainable mobility solutions within the region.
Construction of the bridge began in May 2025 with the assembly of the steel superstructure on a dedicated staging area adjacent to the existing track in the Wels-Maxlhaid area. The bridge itself is an imposing structure, measuring approximately 93.36 meters in total length, with a 90-meter span and a width of 14.55 meters. At a total weight of around 1,800 tonnes in its steel phase, the bridge required meticulous planning and execution for its installation.
The critical phase of the project involved shifting the entire bridge into its final position above the A25 motorway. This complex maneuver utilized a specialized sliding technology, which incorporated a hydraulic fluid system supported by nitrogen to minimize friction and allow for precise, controlled movement. This advanced engineering approach enabled the bridge to be moved millimeter by millimeter into position, ensuring structural integrity and alignment with existing infrastructure.
To facilitate the bridge installation, the A25 motorway was closed to traffic over the weekend. Despite this necessary road closure, the rail service along the West line remained uninterrupted, with no need for track closures or substitute transport services. This was achieved through detailed logistical coordination and phased construction activity, allowing for continuity of both road and rail operations with minimal disruption to commuters and freight traffic.
The bridge, including its concrete components and reinforcement, ultimately weighs approximately 3,500 tonnes. For perspective, this is equivalent to the combined weight of roughly 2,000 elephants, underscoring the scale and complexity of the undertaking. The next stages of the project will involve multiple phases of concrete works, all to be conducted while maintaining ongoing railway operations in the vicinity, further highlighting the logistical and engineering challenges involved in such large-scale infrastructure projects.
The installation of this bridge marks a pivotal step in the broader modernization of the Austrian railway network. The upgrade to a four-track system along the Linz-Wels corridor is expected to significantly increase route capacity, reduce travel times, and support the growing demand for environmentally friendly rail transport options. The project aligns with national and European objectives for sustainable mobility and improved freight corridors, reinforcing Austria's position as a key transit hub in the region.
Looking ahead, the completion of the entire four-track expansion is scheduled for 2031. This development is anticipated to yield long-term benefits for both passenger and freight transportation, supporting regional economic growth and enhancing connectivity across Upper Austria. The successful placement of the bridge over the Welser Motorway stands as a testament to the advanced engineering capabilities and collaborative efforts driving Austria's rail infrastructure improvements.
