Proposed Remand for Suspected IS Terrorist in Vienna

In Vienna, authorities have apprehended an individual suspected of being affiliated with the Islamic State (IS), prompting the Vienna Public Prosecutor's Office to seek pre-trial detention for the accused. The decision regarding this request will be made by the Vienna Regional Criminal Court over the weekend, as confirmed by court spokesperson Daniel Rechenmacher.

The suspect, a 20-year-old Slovak citizen residing in Vienna, is alleged to have been part of a terror cell associated with an individual who attempted an attack at a Taylor Swift concert at the Ernst Happel Stadium in Vienna. He is suspected of collaborating with another individual to plan simultaneous attacks in Mekka, Dubai, and Istanbul starting in February 2024.

Reports indicate that the suspect was supposed to carry out an attack in Istanbul but did not proceed with the plan. He had traveled to Istanbul on March 4, 2024, where he met with Hasan E., the third individual involved. After spending several days in the city sightseeing and shopping, Hasan E. continued on to Mekka, where he committed a violent act on March 11, 2024, using a knife purchased at a market near the Al-Haram Mosque, injuring five people, some of whom sustained life-threatening injuries.

While Hasan E. was arrested in Saudi Arabia, the other two individuals, including the primary suspect, returned to Austria without executing their plans. Beran A., who was also involved, reportedly lost his resolve to carry out the attack while in Dubai and subsequently began preparations for an attack coinciding with a series of Taylor Swift concerts scheduled for early August at the same stadium.

The Directorate for State Protection and Intelligence (DSN) received intelligence from an international partner service regarding the planned attack, which led to the identification and arrest of Beran A. The concerts were subsequently canceled for security reasons.
