Pope Francis Under Continuous Care During Recovery Phase

Pope Francis has entered a critical recovery phase following his recent hospitalization, which lasted 38 days at the Agostino Gemelli University Hospital in Rome. This new phase is characterized by ongoing medical supervision and a structured rehabilitation program.

Following treatment for bilateral pneumonia, the Pope is now focusing on extensive physiotherapy to regain his strength and ability to communicate effectively. His recovery will take place in the Vatican, where he will be under the care of several specialists.

Professor Luigi Carbone, a specialist in internal medicine, has been appointed the Pope's primary physician and will oversee his health at the Santa Marta guesthouse, where the Pope resides. Carbone has a history of caring for the Pope, having treated him for chronic respiratory issues prior to his hospitalization.

In addition to Professor Carbone, Pope Francis is supported by his personal nurse, Massimiliano Strappetti. Strappetti, who has been a pivotal figure in the Pope's health management, previously advocated for a successful surgery that the Pope underwent in 2021, which Francis credited with saving his life.

Chief surgeon Sergio Alfieri, who has performed multiple surgeries on the Pope, including two in recent years, will continue to monitor his recovery. Alfieri is recognized as a leading expert in colorectal surgery and has performed thousands of operations, ensuring that the Pope receives the best possible care.

Measures have been implemented at the Santa Marta guesthouse to facilitate the Pope's treatment and rehabilitation. These adaptations aim to create a conducive environment for his recovery, which is expected to last around two months. During this time, the Pope's interactions with the public will be significantly limited, and access to his residence will be more restricted than usual.

As part of the recovery process, Pope Francis will have minimal work obligations and will refrain from large gatherings. His return to full duties will depend on his health progress, as advised by his medical team.

There is currently uncertainty regarding the Pope's participation in the Holy Week and Easter ceremonies in Rome, with decisions pending based on his recovery trajectory. Additionally, his potential meeting with King Charles of the United Kingdom and a planned visit to Turkey later in May are also subject to change based on his health status.
