Mon 7th Apr, 2025

In the early hours of Sunday, a police operation was initiated in Vienna's Leopoldstadt district following an ATM explosion that left one suspect injured. The incident involved a group of four individuals who detonated explosives at three ATMs on Vorgartenstraße. Authorities reported that following the explosion, a 24-year-old Dutch national attempted to flee the scene but was apprehended after a confrontation with law enforcement officials.

According to the local police, officers were forced to discharge their weapons during the pursuit, resulting in the suspect sustaining injuries. He was subsequently transported to a hospital under police supervision, where he remains in recovery. As of now, law enforcement has not been able to conduct an interrogation due to his condition.

In a coordinated effort, Dutch authorities executed a search warrant at the suspect's residence in the Netherlands shortly after the incident. This action underscores the cross-border nature of the investigation, aimed at apprehending all individuals involved in the ATM bombings.

While the injured suspect is receiving medical care, the remaining members of the group managed to escape on scooters and have yet to be located. The police have not disclosed further details regarding the circumstances surrounding the use of firearms during the operation, as investigations are still ongoing.

The Vienna State Criminal Police are collaborating closely with the Federal Criminal Police Office, particularly with the specialized task force dedicated to investigating ATM explosions, as they work to uncover the motives behind this recent wave of criminal activity. Further information regarding the background and potential connections to similar incidents remains elusive at this stage.

Authorities are urging anyone with information related to the case or the escaped suspects to come forward to assist in the ongoing investigation.
