Wed 1st Oct, 2025

A significant emergency response was triggered in Munich on Wednesday due to reports of a fire and loud explosive sounds. Authorities discovered a completely burned-out transport vehicle in a residential area, and a nearby injured individual later succumbed to their injuries. Investigations revealed that a house in the Lerchenau district was likely set ablaze intentionally, and explosives were found inside the premises.

As a precautionary measure, the Oktoberfest was closed due to a bomb threat associated with the incident. Media reports indicate that the grounds of the festival will remain closed until at least 5 PM on Wednesday.

Police and fire services responded to the scene of the residential fire and explosions, mobilizing significant resources. Initial assessments suggest the deceased may be connected to the incident. A police spokesperson noted that specialized teams are required to safely handle the situation and examine the area further.

Authorities deployed bomb detection dogs to thoroughly search the Oktoberfest grounds. These searches are expected to be time-consuming and require substantial personnel. The festival area has been cordoned off, and festival staff have been instructed to vacate the premises as safety measures are implemented.

Munich's Mayor, Dieter Reiter, has indicated that the Oktoberfest may remain closed for the entire day if necessary to ensure public safety. He assured that the police are committed to conducting a comprehensive search of the area by the afternoon.

Additionally, police are investigating a potential connection to Antifa, following the publication of a message on the website Indymedia that claimed responsibility for several acts of arson in the northern region of Munich. The police are assessing all available information and leads to ascertain any links to the ongoing situation.

The series of events began early in the morning when residents in the Lerchenau district reported hearing loud bangs resembling gunshots and witnessed flames. The injured individual was later confirmed to have ties to the fire incident.

Due to the seriousness of the situation, heavily armed police units established a 200-meter evacuation zone around the affected building, and a nearby school was also closed as a precaution. Fire crews responded with approximately 100 personnel to combat the blaze and ensure community safety.
