New Attraction: Panther and Sulcata Tortoises at Haag Zoo

The Haag Zoo has unveiled its latest attraction: a newly designed habitat for two Panther tortoises and three baby Sulcata tortoises. This new enclosure is situated adjacent to the existing Störteich and the budgerigars.

Previously, this area was home to crowned cranes, but it has been significantly modified to meet the specific needs of the tortoise species. It is essential for these reptiles to have access to a heated shelter during the winter and a grassy area in the summer. The design of the habitat includes a variety of substrates such as sand, water pools, and stone slabs, which aim to create a stimulating environment for the animals.

The Panther tortoises, known for their striking patterns, along with the Sulcata tortoises, which are currently only ten centimeters in size, have been transferred to Haag from another zoo. Such exchanges among zoological institutions are common practice, facilitating the establishment of a diverse genetic pool.

Prior to this addition, the Haag Zoo primarily featured only marsh tortoises, alongside Sika deer, which reach a maximum size of thirty centimeters. The introduction of the Panther and Sulcata tortoises marks a significant expansion in the zoo's reptile collection, providing visitors with a chance to learn about and appreciate these unique species.
