NEOS Calls for EU Parliamentary Representation in Lower Austria's Landtag

Mon 12th May, 2025

The NEOS party in Lower Austria is advocating for a change in the state's parliamentary procedures to allow European Union representatives to speak in the Landtag. Currently, EU parliamentarians do not have the right to address the assembly in Lower Austria, a rule that contrasts with practices in Vienna, Carinthia, and Styria where such rights are granted.

On Monday morning, Indra Collini, the regional party chair of NEOS, made a public appeal directly outside the Landtag, urging the Schwarz-Blau coalition to revise this restriction. Collini emphasized the importance of having EU representatives participate in local legislative discussions, arguing that if they cannot speak within the Landtag, they will do so outside of it. She was joined by Helmut Brandstätter, an EU member of parliament representing the party.

This initiative reflects a growing concern among political leaders in Lower Austria regarding the need for better representation of EU perspectives at the local level. By advocating for an 'EU hour' within the Landtag, NEOS aims to enhance dialogue and understanding of European policies and their implications for local governance.

The absence of EU parliamentary representation in the Landtag has raised eyebrows among political observers, who believe that such a lack of engagement could hinder the state's ability to effectively address issues influenced by European legislation. NEOS argues that allowing EU representatives to speak would not only enrich the legislative process but also strengthen the connection between local and European governance.

As discussions around this proposal unfold, it remains to be seen how the Schwarz-Blau coalition will respond to the call for greater inclusivity in the Landtag. The party's stance on this issue could set a precedent for future interactions between local governance and European institutions.
