Mystery Surrounds Skeleton Found in Styrian Forest

The police in Austria are seeking assistance from the public after the discovery of a skeleton in a remote area of the Obersteiermark region. The remains, identified as those of a man estimated to be around 60 years old, were found in May 2025 near the Schwaberger Alm in the municipality of Oberzeiring, located in the Murtal district.

The initial discovery occurred on May 8, 2025, when authorities located the body in the Bretsteingraben area. According to the latest forensic reports, the deceased man is believed to have been over 60 years old, standing approximately 1.70 meters tall. The skeletal remains showed signs of previous injuries, including a healed collarbone fracture and several healed rib fractures. Investigators estimate that the body had been lying in the forest for several years.

Based on the condition of a piece of clothing found with the remains, it is suggested that the man likely passed away no earlier than 2009. However, a definitive cause of death has yet to be determined, and police are conducting investigations in multiple directions.

Among the personal items found near the skeleton were a pair of black Adidas jogging pants, a black rain jacket, a dark blue long-sleeve cycling jersey, a pair of black cycling shorts with a red padding, and a gray cycling shirt. Additionally, a Cube Ltd. bicycle, manufactured between 2003 and 2007, was recovered at the site. The bike's frame number has not yet yielded any leads, but its well-maintained condition suggests it may have been used after the man's death.

Despite several search operations, investigators have not uncovered any further belongings or personal effects that could assist in identifying the deceased. DNA testing has also failed to provide any clues regarding the man's identity. Authorities continue to appeal to the public for any information that might help solve this case.
