Recent disclosures from the United States Department of Justice have brought to light communications indicating that Norwegian royal, Mette-Marit, spent several days at Jeffrey Epstein's Palm Beach property. These revelations are part of over three million documents, including emails and text messages, which were made public and detail various interactions between Epstein and numerous high-profile individuals.
The documents indicate that Mette-Marit, who had previously acknowledged multiple meetings with Epstein between 2011 and 2013, appears in the records on numerous occasions. However, most references to her are incidental and do not suggest any direct involvement in illegal activities. In response to the new information, she has expressed regret over her association with Epstein, who was convicted in 2008 of charges related to the solicitation of minors.
Another Norwegian figure featured in the recent document release is former Prime Minister Thorbjørn Jagland. The records reveal that Jagland and his family considered visiting Epstein's Caribbean island in 2014, a location suspected of being linked to several criminal offenses. However, Jagland ultimately canceled the visit due to pressing diplomatic responsibilities connected to his role as Secretary General of the Council of Europe at the time.
The ongoing publication of Epstein-related materials began in early 2024, with the initial release confirming Epstein's extensive connections with prominent individuals across various sectors. Over the past year, tens of thousands of additional documents, as well as thousands of videos and images, have been made available to the public, providing further insight into Epstein's network and the individuals associated with him.
In the latest release, U.S. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche presented the documents to the public, following near-unanimous approval from both chambers of Congress for their disclosure. While some critics have speculated that previous delays in publication were motivated by efforts to protect high-profile individuals.
For Sweden, Princess Sofia's name appears in the context of Epstein's social circle. However, there is no evidence of direct communication between her and Epstein. The only specific mention relates to an event involving a private viewing of the musical Les Misérables, which did not take place. The Swedish Royal Court has clarified that Princess Sofia was not present at the event and is unaware of how her name appeared in the documents.
The partial redaction of names in the released files has sparked criticism, particularly concerning the balance between protecting the privacy of those accused and the need for transparency regarding the identities of alleged victims. Lawmakers have also raised concerns over the fact that, despite the release of millions of documents, a significant portion of potentially relevant material remains undisclosed. The Department of Justice has stated that the latest batch represents the final release, drawing further demands for the complete publication of all records.
These revelations continue to fuel debate over issues of accountability, transparency, and the extent of Epstein's connections with influential figures. As the public and authorities examine the newly released documents, calls persist for a thorough review of all remaining records to ensure full disclosure and maintain public trust in official institutions.
