In a stunning turn of events, reigning world champion Max Verstappen claimed the pole position for the Formula 1 Japanese Grand Prix at the Suzuka Circuit, setting a new track record of 1:26.983 minutes. The Dutch driver outpaced the favored McLaren duo of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, finishing just 0.012 seconds ahead of Norris and 0.044 seconds ahead of Piastri.
This pole marks Verstappen's first of the season and his fourth consecutive start from the front row at Suzuka. Expressing his excitement, Verstappen remarked on the performance, which he described as nearly beyond the limit. The achievement is particularly significant given that McLaren had dominated the earlier practice sessions and the initial qualifying rounds.
Norris, who leads the championship standings, acknowledged Verstappen's impressive lap time, while also noting the quality of his own performance. Historically, Suzuka poses challenges for overtaking, with only three races since 1991 won by drivers starting outside the front row, underscoring the importance of qualifying at this circuit.
Verstappen's record-breaking lap surpassed the previous best set by Sebastian Vettel in 2019. Following the top three, Charles Leclerc secured fourth position, trailing by 0.316 seconds, while Mercedes drivers George Russell and rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli completed the third row. Notably, young driver Isack Hadjar finished seventh, placing him ahead of seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton.
Red Bull Racing introduced a specialized livery for the Japanese Grand Prix, with the team's motorsport advisor expressing surprise at the unexpected success. Following a series of adjustments and strategic risks in car specifications, Verstappen's engineer managed to optimize performance, leading to this notable achievement.
Yuki Tsunoda, Verstappen's new teammate, faced a challenging qualifying session, finishing 15th and just behind Liam Lawson of the junior team. Tsunoda's performance was hindered by a mistake in the first corner, according to team sources.
As the race day approaches, predictions indicate potential rain, which could impact race conditions. However, many believe such weather may favor Verstappen's driving style. The forecast suggests rain may subside just before the race begins, adding an element of unpredictability to the event.
