Mariazellerbahn Set for Partial Closures Due to Major Modernization Works

Sat 31st Jan, 2026

The Mariazellerbahn railway line will undergo a series of scheduled modernization projects between St. Pölten Hauptbahnhof and Mariazell in early 2026. These works, taking place from mid-February through the end of April, are part of ongoing efforts to enhance the safety, comfort, and long-term reliability of this single-track narrow-gauge line. The operator, Niederösterreichische Verkehrsorganisationsgesellschaft (NÖVOG), aims to ensure the railway remains a modern and dependable mode of transportation for the region.

The scheduled construction follows a full closure in November and will be conducted in several phases to minimize disruption. On the valley section of the route, key projects include replacing railway sleepers across multiple segments and comprehensive refurbishment between the stations of Weinburg and Kammerhof. In the mountainous stretches, several tunnels will be upgraded, including significant work in the Gösingtunnel. There is also a large-scale renovation planned between Erlaufklause and Mitterbach, which will feature both structural improvements and the renewal of overhead power lines.

The timeline for these phased works is carefully structured to maintain service continuity wherever possible. The first closure will affect the section from Laubenbachmühle to Mariazell, running from February 16 to February 22. Following this, the segment between Ober-Grafendorf and Mariazell will be closed from February 23 to March 1. The most extensive closure will occur from March 2 to April 3, during which the entire stretch from St. Pölten Hauptbahnhof to Mariazell will be inaccessible for trains. Finally, a further closure of the Ober-Grafendorf to Mariazell section is scheduled from April 4 to April 30.

During these periods, a rail replacement bus service will be in operation to assist passengers. Buses will connect the impacted stations and designated alternative stops, maintaining the regular departure times of the Mariazellerbahn. Passengers wishing to bring bicycles on the replacement buses will need to make advance arrangements by telephone, ensuring smooth transport for all travelers.

The modernization program prioritizes both passenger safety and comfort, reflecting the growing demand for public transportation in the region. These investments are intended to secure sustainable, reliable, and comfortable mobility for the future. The regional transportation authority has emphasized its commitment to serving both travelers and the local community, recognizing the importance of continuous improvement and infrastructure upgrades.

The Mariazellerbahn is a vital transport link for Lower Austria and the surrounding regions, blending historical significance with contemporary mobility needs. This series of modernization works is expected to further enhance its reputation as a safe and customer-focused railway, supporting both daily commuters and visitors to the area. Ongoing feedback from travelers highlights high satisfaction with the line, which has consistently received positive reviews for its service and regional impact.

Passengers are encouraged to consult the official Mariazellerbahn and NÖVOG channels for updates on schedules, alternative arrangements, and further information regarding the construction phases. The modernization project underscores the continued investment in Austria's public transportation infrastructure, aiming to provide an efficient and forward-looking rail service for years to come.
