A 44-year-old man was arrested in Vienna's Leopoldstadt district for assaulting his 34-year-old girlfriend just two weeks into their relationship. The incident occurred on Easter Sunday when the man allegedly struck the woman and threatened her with a knife.

Authorities were alerted by a vigilant neighbor who heard screams coming from the apartment and promptly called emergency services. Upon arrival, police officers found the woman visibly shaken and trembling, accompanied by her agitated partner.

According to police spokeswoman Anna Gutt, the man had hidden the knife in a drawer. Both individuals appeared to be under the influence of drugs, complicating the situation. The suspect displayed aggressive behavior towards the officers, leading to his immediate detention.

In light of the circumstances, law enforcement issued a temporary restraining order against him, prohibiting him from approaching the victim, along with a provisional weapons ban. The woman received emergency medical assistance and was later transported to a hospital for further evaluation.

Reports indicate that the suspect exhibited extreme jealousy, even suggesting marriage after only a fortnight of dating. When the woman expressed her reluctance to rush into such a commitment, he reacted with hostility and abusive language.

The public prosecutor's office has decided to file charges against the man, who has a history of prior offenses, for dangerous threats and bodily harm. This case underscores the ongoing issue of domestic violence, prompting calls for greater awareness and support for victims.
