Over Half a Million Migrants Await Passage to Europe in Libya

According to recent reports, approximately 550,000 migrants and asylum seekers are currently in Libya, seeking an opportunity to cross into Europe. These figures, released by Greek authorities, highlight the ongoing migration pressures along the Mediterranean route.

Greek officials have stated that they are collaborating closely with the European Union's border agency, Frontex, as well as Libyan authorities to address the situation. The primary goals of this cooperation include combating human smuggling networks, detecting vessels early, and preventing unauthorized departures from the North African coastline.

The warning from Greek authorities comes amid a surge in arrivals near Crete. Greek coast guard units recently rescued 125 individuals traveling in two boats south of the island, reflecting the continued risks faced by those attempting the dangerous journey across the Mediterranean. Favorable weather conditions, with calm seas and light winds between Libya and Crete, have contributed to an increase in migration attempts in recent days. Officials suspect that additional boats have already departed from Libyan shores toward Greece.

Data from the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) indicates that around 42,000 migrants reached Greek islands by sea last year, entering the European Union through this maritime route. Despite enhanced monitoring and rescue efforts, the journey remains perilous, with the UNHCR recording 107 fatalities in the eastern Mediterranean during the same period.

European authorities remain focused on strengthening border controls and increasing cooperation with countries like Libya to manage migration flows and prevent human trafficking.
