Lebanon Criticizes Hezbollah After Israeli Attacks Escalate in Southern Regions

On Monday, Israeli authorities ordered the evacuation of 53 villages in southern Lebanon, an area home to approximately 250,000 residents, predominantly Shiite communities. This mass movement has led to significant traffic congestion on roads heading toward Beirut as families seek safety. The Israeli military has positioned three infantry divisions near the border, and indicators suggest that a ground incursion similar to the one in 2024 may be imminent.

Lebanon continues to grapple with the effects of internal displacement following Hezbollah's assault on Israel in October 2023, which was followed by intense Israeli airstrikes targeting border villages largely associated with Hezbollah. Over 100,000 people were forced to flee during those events, many of whom still reside in makeshift settlements or with host families in Beirut and Tripoli. On Tuesday, Israeli operations extended into Beirut, including attacks on sites linked to Hezbollah, such as the Al-Manar television station. Lebanon's current leadership has taken a firm stance against Hezbollah's recent actions. The prime minister has declared Hezbollah's military operations unlawful, a position supported by the speaker of parliament, a prominent Shiite figure. The president has also cautioned Hezbollah against continuing conflict from Lebanese territory, warning of repercussions for engaging in hostilities on behalf of external actors. Additionally, the judiciary has initiated legal proceedings against individuals responsible for launching rocket attacks toward Haifa.

Analysts note that Hezbollah's recent rocket fire toward Israel, while limited in scale and impact, appeared to be motivated more by internal pressures and the desire to uphold credibility than by a genuine intent to expand the conflict. The organization's leadership reportedly engaged in significant internal debate following the confirmation of Iran's supreme leader's death, ultimately launching symbolic attacks to fulfill previous commitments. However, these actions did not cause substantial damage or target critical infrastructure.

Israel, in response, has used these incidents as justification for intensified military operations against Hezbollah positions across southern Lebanon, Beirut, and the Beqaa Valley, resulting in ongoing airstrikes. Within Lebanon, political groups traditionally opposed to Hezbollah, such as the Kataeb and Lebanese Forces, have openly welcomed the pressure on the organization. Even among leaders who adopt a more restrained tone, there is acknowledgment of the complex challenges Hezbollah's actions have brought upon the nation.

The current crisis underscores Lebanon's vulnerability to regional dynamics and external influences. Since 1969, when Lebanon was compelled to allow foreign armed groups to operate against Israel from its territory, the country has endured repeated interventions by foreign actors, including Palestinians, Israelis, Syrians, and Iranians. Observers note that significant changes in Iran's internal politics or its support for Hezbollah could signal a historic opportunity for Lebanon to move toward greater sovereignty and independence from external pressures.
