The parliamentary inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death of former Justice Section Chief Christian Pilnacek continued today, with a particular focus on political influence within the justice system. Among those scheduled to testify is Martin Kreutner, an established anti-corruption specialist known for his leadership of the investigative commission appointed by former Justice Minister Alma Zadic. The commission was tasked with examining any potential political interference during Pilnacek's tenure as section chief.
The session garnered significant interest from all parliamentary factions. Representatives from the Social Democratic Party (SPÖ), the Greens, and NEOS highlighted as a central concern whether there existed a system of unequal treatment within the judiciary. Their statements emphasized the importance of gaining deeper insights from the commission's findings. In particular, they aim to clarify if there were instances of preferential or disadvantageous treatment based on political connections within the justice system.
Members of the Freedom Party (FPÖ), led by Michael Schilchegger, expressed their anticipation for further information derived from the commission's report. Schilchegger referenced allegations that the report documents the existence of entrenched political networks, specifically ones influenced by the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP). The committee also plans to hear testimony from a former staff member of ex-Interior Minister Wolfgang Sobotka. This individual is considered crucial to the inquiry, as she was reportedly among the last to see Pilnacek alive.
Jan Krainer of the SPÖ outlined his intention to investigate how confidential files from Sobotka's office may have ended up on Pilnacek's personal laptop. This line of questioning is expected to shed light on possible breaches in protocol and information security within government offices.
Andreas Hanger, representing the ÖVP, raised concerns about the impartiality of the commission led by Kreutner. He questioned the objectivity of both the methods employed and the selection of individuals interviewed by the commission. According to Hanger, some interviews were not formally documented, relying instead on memory notes, and some were allegedly conducted in informal locations such as coffeehouses. These procedural criticisms are likely to be addressed during the session, as part of a broader discussion on the reliability and fairness of the investigative process.
Additionally, the committee will hear from a former aide to Wolfgang Sobotka, who is currently employed by Interior Minister Gerhard Karner. This witness is expected to provide further context about Pilnacek's final days and the handling of sensitive documents within political offices.
The ongoing inquiry reflects the parliament's commitment to transparency and accountability in the justice system. The focus remains on clarifying the extent of political influence during Pilnacek's administrative period and ensuring that all findings are thoroughly scrutinized for future reforms.
