Italian authorities have apprehended 44 individuals in a sweeping law enforcement operation targeting the Camorra, a powerful criminal organisation based in the Naples region. The coordinated raids focused on dismantling the influence of Camorra clans within several communities in the province of Naples, specifically Nola, Cicciano, and Casamarciano.
According to findings by prosecutors in Naples, the Camorra exercised extensive control over economic activities, either directly or through indirect means, across these municipalities. Investigations revealed that the Russo clan, one of the region's most influential Camorra groups, allegedly manipulated local electoral processes. Authorities assert that the clan influenced municipal elections in Cicciano in May 2023 and in Casamarciano in June 2022, using their power to sway voting outcomes to advance their interests.
The individuals arrested face a range of charges, including forming a mafia-type criminal association, organising illegal gambling and sports betting operations, extortion, attempted extortion, and other related offences. These criminal acts were reportedly designed to strengthen the position and operations of the Camorra clans within their respective territories. Furthermore, investigators have raised allegations of illicit political dealings, with some suspects accused of engaging in vote trading to secure favourable results for the organisation.
The structure of the Camorra differs significantly from other mafia groups in Italy, such as the Sicilian Cosa Nostra. Unlike the latter, which operates under a hierarchical leadership, the Camorra is composed of approximately 100 autonomous clans, each managing its own affairs and territories. These clans often enter into mutual agreements for cooperation but maintain a high degree of independence, shaping the criminal landscape across the Naples metropolitan area and the broader Campania region.
Italian law enforcement agencies estimate that the Camorra has around 6,000 members, making it one of the largest criminal organisations in the country. Its activities extend beyond direct criminal acts to include extensive involvement in local business, politics, and public life, exerting a pervasive influence throughout the region. The latest operation underscores ongoing efforts by Italian authorities to combat organised crime and limit its impact on the political and economic fabric of affected communities.
The crackdown highlights the persistent challenges faced by law enforcement in addressing organised crime in southern Italy. Authorities continue to prioritise investigations into the financial and political networks that sustain the Camorra's operations, aiming to disrupt their capacity to influence local governance and the economy.
