In the wake of the tragic attack at a school in Graz, the Austrian government has announced a series of measures aimed at providing immediate support to those affected. Federal Chancellor Christian Stocker outlined these initiatives, which have been met with approval from various political leaders, including Werner Kogler, the leader of the Green Party.
Kogler emphasized the importance of swift and uncomplicated assistance for the victims, stating that it is crucial for society to stand by students, school staff, and those mourning the loss of loved ones. He highlighted the need for a robust support system during this difficult time.
However, Kogler also called for a fundamental reevaluation of gun ownership laws in Austria. He noted that the recent violence underscores a pressing need to prioritize the protection of the public over the right to possess firearms. Kogler argued that the current laws allow nearly any adult to acquire a weapon with minimal restrictions, which he believes should be reconsidered. He advocated for a shift in policy where private individuals would not typically be allowed to purchase firearms, with exceptions reserved for specific groups such as hunters, sport shooters, and individuals facing documented threats.
Furthermore, Kogler pointed out the necessity of enhancing psychological support services in schools as a critical component of violence prevention efforts. He called for immediate access to affordable psychological assistance for young people, referencing previous initiatives that expanded such services. He urged the government to ensure adequate funding for these programs to facilitate the prompt deployment of qualified psychologists within schools.
Kogler expressed concern over the situation in Styria, where the regional government has reportedly underfunded essential support services, including counseling for men, which he believes is a setback for violence prevention and sends a negative message at this crucial time.
