Tensions Rise Between Germany and the US Over AFD Classification

Sat 3rd May, 2025

Recent diplomatic friction has emerged between Germany and the United States following the German Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution's classification of the Alternative for Germany (AFD) party as extremist. This decision has prompted sharp reactions from US officials, including Vice President Vance, who criticized the German establishment for allegedly resurrecting a metaphorical Berlin Wall.

The AFD, known for its anti-immigration stance and pro-Russian sentiments, has gained significant electoral traction, securing 20.8% of the vote in the latest elections--double its previous results. Current polls suggest that public support for the party may be climbing to approximately 25%.

In response to the classification, which also applies to the party's youth wing and various state chapters, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio described the move as 'disguised tyranny' on the social media platform X. He argued that the real extremism lies not with the AFD, but rather in the German establishment's immigration policies, which he believes should be reevaluated.

Germany's Foreign Ministry has defended the classification, asserting that it was based on an independent investigation aimed at safeguarding the country's democratic framework. The ministry emphasized the importance of learning from history to prevent the rise of right-wing extremism.

As the political landscape evolves, the AFD's growing influence raises concerns among many observers about the implications for Germany's future governance and its relationship with allies, particularly the United States. The situation warrants close attention as both nations navigate these complex political waters.
