Germany has announced plans to purchase Tomahawk cruise missiles from the United States, with deployment to take place within its territory. The agreement was finalized during discussions on the sidelines of a NATO meeting in Ankara, as confirmed by Chancellor Friedrich Merz in a government statement. This move is intended to address a strategic gap in Germany's defense capabilities.
The acquisition follows a previously established arrangement under former German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and former US President Joe Biden. The original agreement stipulated that the US would station Tomahawk missiles in Germany as an interim measure while Germany, France, and the United Kingdom developed their own missile systems. However, the plan was later reconsidered by the subsequent US administration under President Donald Trump, who advocated for a policy where European countries would assume more responsibility for their own security, including through direct arms purchases from the United States.
According to government sources, a declaration of intent was signed on July 7, outlining that the US would authorize the sale of Tomahawk missiles and associated ground-based Typhoon launchers to Germany in August. The precise number of missiles and launchers to be acquired remains classified. The measure is positioned as a short-term solution, with European nations working to develop indigenous missile capabilities for long-term security needs.
Several European defense ministers have voiced their commitment to advancing domestic missile programs, aiming to strengthen European defense autonomy. The German government anticipates that these efforts will involve investments totaling around 50 billion euros, with Germany expected to contribute about half of this amount.
In parallel, Chancellor Merz highlighted the recent order placed by Canada for German-built submarines, marking the largest international defense contract in the history of the Federal Republic of Germany. This deal is projected to generate up to 100 billion euros in value over the coming decades, reflecting Germany's expanding role in the global defense industry.
During his government address, Chancellor Merz also emphasized the reform agenda of the current coalition government. He responded to critics who claim the political center is ineffective by underscoring the coalition's commitment to constitutional responsibilities and effective governance. This statement was made in the context of rising support for the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.
The main focus of Merz's address was the series of reforms recently agreed upon by the governing coalition. The reform package, consisting of 34 measures, is primarily aimed at increasing flexibility for businesses, safeguarding the social welfare system, and reducing the tax burden on employees. Key elements of the package include ten billion euros in tax cuts, more flexible employment contracts, a reorganization of the pension system, and significant reductions in bureaucracy. The overarching goal is to help Germany recover from economic challenges and reinforce the stability of its social security systems.
The developments surrounding Germany's missile procurement and ongoing defense investments highlight the country's evolving approach to national and European security, as well as its role in broader economic and industrial reforms.
