FPÖ Proposes Inquiry into Interior Ministry Affairs

The Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) is poised to initiate a parliamentary inquiry into matters concerning the Interior Ministry. Speculation has arisen regarding the focus of this investigation, particularly surrounding the circumstances involving the late Justice Section Chief Christian Pilnacek. There is potential for discussions on the inquiries related to his death to be included in the parliamentary investigation. Additionally, the FPÖ has shown interest in scrutinizing the COVID-19 measures implemented by the previous government.

With a strong representation of 57 seats in the National Council, the FPÖ has the capability to independently launch a parliamentary inquiry. A minority resolution only requires the signatures of a quarter of the representatives, which amounts to 46 signatures. Nevertheless, the FPÖ hopes to gain at least some level of support from other political parties.

Chancellor Stocker, who has previously participated in inquiries for his faction, expressed little surprise at the FPÖ's intentions, stating that the idea has been in the works for some time. He indicated that he would reserve judgment on the inquiry until the specific topics of investigation are clearly defined, but he conveyed a strong belief that the inquiry is primarily politically motivated, citing the effective management of the Interior Ministry in the past.

Prior to the FPÖ's formal decision on the inquiry's focus, Werner Kogler, the leader of the Green Party, commented on the FPÖ's plans during a press conference. He emphasized that the responsibility lies with the FPÖ to advance the inquiry and clarified that the Green Party is willing to contribute to the investigation without endorsing any conspiracy theories.
