Fatal Collision Between Ski Tourer and Skier in Salzburg Raises Safety Concerns

Sun 8th Feb, 2026

A tragic incident occurred at the Maria Alm ski resort in the Pinzgau region of Salzburg, where a 65-year-old ski tourer lost his life following a collision with a descending skier. The accident took place on Saturday around midday on the Schwarzeckalm descent, an area frequented by both ski tourers ascending and skiers making their way downhill.

According to reports, the 65-year-old local resident was ascending the marked piste when he was struck by a 20-year-old skier from the Pongau district, who was descending the slope at the time. Both individuals sustained serious injuries as a result of the high-impact collision.

Emergency services responded swiftly, with on-site staff administering immediate first aid until the arrival of the emergency medical helicopter. The injured ski tourer was airlifted to the Christian Doppler Clinic in Salzburg for urgent medical attention. Despite intensive treatment, he succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. The skier involved in the collision was also transported by helicopter to the hospital in Schwarzach due to the severity of his injuries.

The local police have initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident. Authorities are examining factors such as the trajectory of both individuals, the conditions of the piste, and adherence to safety regulations in place for both ski tourers and skiers. The Maria Alm ski area management confirmed that ski touring on the piste is permitted provided that established guidelines are followed. It was noted that an alternative, dedicated ascent route was available but was not open at the time of the incident.

This event has renewed discussions regarding the safe coexistence of ski tourers and alpine skiers on shared pistes. As ski touring continues to gain popularity, especially in alpine regions like Salzburg, questions are being raised about the adequacy of current safety measures and the importance of clear demarcation between ascent and descent routes to minimize the risk of collisions.

Local authorities and ski area operators are urging all winter sports enthusiasts to strictly observe the rules governing piste usage. These rules are designed to protect everyone on the mountain, whether ascending or descending, and to ensure that emergency access routes remain clear at all times.

As investigations continue, the incident serves as a somber reminder of the potential dangers present on busy ski slopes, especially where multiple types of winter sports activities overlap. The outcome of the police inquiry is expected to provide further insight into the factors contributing to the accident and may influence future policies regarding piste safety and ski touring regulations in the region.
