EU Court Rules Poland Must Recognize Same-Sex Marriages Registered Abroad

The European Union's highest court has determined that Poland cannot refuse to recognize same-sex marriages lawfully registered in other EU member states. This judgment addresses a dispute involving two Polish nationals who married in Germany and later sought to have their marriage officially recorded in Poland's civil registry. Polish authorities initially declined, citing national laws that only recognize marriages between a man and a woman.

The case ultimately reached the European Court of Justice (ECJ) in Luxembourg, where judges assessed whether such non-recognition was compatible with EU principles and citizens' rights. Therefore, Poland is required to process and acknowledge marriages of same-sex couples conducted legally in other EU countries, without discrimination.
