Train Performs Emergency Stop to Avoid School Bus at Kitzbühel Railway Crossing

Fri 3rd Jul, 2026

An incident involving a school bus and a train occurred last week in Kitzbühel, Tyrol, highlighting safety concerns at local railway crossings. According to police reports, the event took place near the Hornkreuzung railway intersection. A school bus, transporting approximately 30 children and several adults, became stranded on the tracks as the railway barrier began to close, prompting an emergency stop by an oncoming train.

Preliminary police investigations suggest that the bus entered the crossing while the signal was already red. However, the driver stated during questioning that he believed the signal had not yet changed. As the bus stopped on the tracks, the barrier descended and made contact with the rear of the vehicle, but did not fully close. This partial closure triggered a warning system, alerting the railway dispatcher.

The dispatcher responded immediately by initiating an emergency stop for an approaching train, which was already close to the crossing. Thanks to the prompt intervention, no injuries were reported among the passengers of the bus or the train. The Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) confirmed that the safety systems functioned as intended during the incident.

The bus driver has been temporarily relieved from operational duties pending the outcome of an internal investigation by the transport company. The company emphasized the importance of maintaining high safety standards, especially when transporting schoolchildren, and pledged to review the incident thoroughly before deciding on any disciplinary measures.

Police have opened an inquiry into a potential violation of railway crossing regulations by the bus driver. At this stage, authorities do not anticipate pursuing criminal charges, but the investigation is ongoing to determine whether existing procedures were followed and if additional safety measures are necessary.

Local officials expressed concern over how narrowly a serious accident was avoided. In response, a meeting was arranged the following day, including city officials, members of the crisis intervention team from the Red Cross, and affected parents. Reports indicated that ten parents participated and shared that their children were significantly shaken by the event.

The city administration is now considering changes to the school bus route to enhance safety. The current route includes a loop over the Gesundheitshügel area, which leads to the problematic crossing. City representatives are working closely with the Tyrol Transport Association to find an alternative path for the bus that avoids this intersection.

This incident has brought renewed attention to the complexity of road and rail intersections in Kitzbühel and the challenges faced by drivers. City leaders acknowledged that the combination of railway and road traffic in certain areas remains difficult to manage and stated that discussions are underway to implement safer routing and additional preventive measures.

The safety of school transport remains a top priority for both the city and transportation providers. The swift response by authorities and the railway operator prevented a potential disaster and has triggered a comprehensive review of protocols and infrastructure at railway crossings in the region.
