Mon 31st Mar, 2025

Novak Djokovic faced an unexpected defeat in the final of the Miami Masters, missing the opportunity to secure his 100th title on the ATP Tour. The former world number one lost to Czech player Jakub Mensik in a closely contested match, with a final score of 6-7 (4-7), 6-7 (4-7). For Mensik, just 19 years old, this victory marks his first title in professional tennis.

The match was delayed for over five hours due to rain, with players finally taking to the court at 8:37 PM local time. After 2 hours and 3 minutes of intense play, Mensik clinched the win by converting a crucial point against the 37-year-old Djokovic.

During the trophy presentation, Mensik expressed his admiration for Djokovic, stating that he had inspired him to pursue a career in tennis. This sentiment underscored the significance of the match, as Mensik was not even two years old when Djokovic first won the Miami tournament in 2007.

Only two players in ATP history have achieved the milestone of 100 tournament victories: Jimmy Connors with 109 titles and Roger Federer with 103. Djokovic, with the potential for a seventh title in Miami, would have matched the legendary Andre Agassi's record as well. However, in this tightly contested match, Mensik demonstrated remarkable composure during the tiebreaks, ultimately overcoming the record-holding Grand Slam champion.
