A powerful earthquake has struck the Philippines, claiming the lives of at least 60 individuals, according to local authorities. The death toll is expected to rise as rescue operations continue. Many of the victims were reportedly injured or killed by falling debris during the quake.
More than 140 people sustained injuries in the disaster, as reported by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council. The earthquake, measured at a magnitude of 6.9, occurred late on Tuesday evening, local time, at a depth of ten kilometers off the coasts of Cebu and Leyte islands, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
Numerous buildings have collapsed, and power outages have been reported across the affected regions. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology indicated that over 370 aftershocks followed, with some reaching magnitudes of up to 4.8. Fortunately, no tsunami warning was issued.
Authorities have labeled the situation a "catastrophe," with ongoing aftershocks causing many residents to hesitate returning to their homes. In Bogo City, a municipality with a population of approximately 90,000 located near the earthquake's epicenter, 27 fatalities were confirmed, including minors.
In San Remigio, six people died when a sports facility collapsed during a basketball game, as stated by local law enforcement. Reports from the provincial government of Cebu confirmed the destruction of a business establishment and a school in Bantayan, alongside significant damage to several rural roads.
Social media platforms have been flooded with videos and images depicting the aftermath of the quake, showcasing damaged structures, including churches, and crowds of frightened individuals. One video captured people seeking shelter under tables and praying as ceilings crumbled in a shopping mall, while another showed vehicles halting on a swaying bridge.
In Bogo City, bodies were found outside the provincial hospital, which had to evacuate all patients into tents for safety. Streets were littered with debris, and cracks appeared in the pavement. In Tabuelan, an avalanche blocked a major highway, while a fire broke out in a shopping center in Consolacion, as reported by disaster response teams.
The Philippines is situated on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area known for its high seismic activity due to the convergence of multiple tectonic plates, leading to frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Indonesia, which is also part of this region, experienced a separate earthquake measuring 6.0 off the coast of Java on the same evening, although no immediate reports of casualties or damage were available.
