Death Toll Revised to 33 in Congo Shipwreck Incident

In a tragic maritime accident that occurred in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the death toll has been revised to 33, according to local authorities. The mayor of Mbandaka, Yves Balo, confirmed this figure following discussions with the country's Vice Minister of the Interior, Eugénie Tshiela, who traveled from Kinshasa to assess the situation in the provincial capital of Équateur.

The incident, which involved a wooden vessel on the Congo River, initially led to reports of a much higher number of fatalities. An earlier statement from local legislator Joséphine-Pacifique Lokumu indicated that rescue teams had recovered 143 bodies. However, Mayor Balo attributed the discrepancy in the reported figures to confusion stemming from multiple incidents occurring in the area.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo, a vast central African nation, has limited road infrastructure, which results in heavy reliance on boats and ferries for transportation across its numerous lakes and rivers. Unfortunately, this reliance often leads to maritime disasters. Previous incidents have also seen significant loss of life, including over 47 casualties from a boat sinking on the Congo River in October 2023 and more than 20 fatalities when another vessel capsized on Lake Kivu in October 2024.
