Cuba Signals Readiness for Dialogue with United States Amid Crisis

The Cuban government has indicated a willingness to initiate discussions with the United States, as the island nation confronts mounting economic and humanitarian challenges. The Cuban president acknowledged that intensified economic measures from the United States, described as a form of economic suffocation, have exacerbated Cuba's ongoing crisis. He called for resilience and adaptability from citizens, emphasizing the need for collective effort to overcome the hardships, while also attributing the situation to external political and psychological pressures from the United States.

Recent policy decisions from the U.S. administration, led by President Donald Trump, have heightened strain on the Cuban economy. A new executive order threatens sanctions on any country supplying oil to Cuba, aiming to further restrict the island's access to critical energy resources. The resulting fuel shortages have led to extensive lines at the few operational petrol stations, with reports of taxi drivers waiting over a day to obtain their government-rationed fuel. The government has capped weekly petrol purchases at 40 liters per person and now requires payment in U.S. dollars, a currency that is scarce among the population.

In response to the crisis, Mexico has proposed humanitarian aid in the form of oil shipments to Cuba. Despite U.S. efforts to discourage these deliveries, Mexican officials have stated their commitment to providing assistance. The disruption in energy supplies poses a severe risk to public services, including hospitals that rely on diesel generators during frequent power outages. According to recent reports, Cuba's current reserves may last only a few more weeks.

Beyond fuel shortages, Cuba is grappling with worsening food insecurity. Reports from international media indicate that residents in Havana have resorted to searching for food in trash bins, and begging has become more common. Power outages are widespread, with some neighborhoods in the capital receiving electricity for as little as four hours per day. Rural areas face even longer blackouts, often lasting for several days at a time.

Rising transportation and food costs, driven by increased fuel prices, have further strained household budgets. Many Cubans depend on remittances from relatives abroad for access to hard currency, but those without such support are finding it increasingly difficult to manage daily expenses. The ongoing power shortages have also disrupted access to information, as many were unable to watch the president's address due to lack of electricity, relying instead on secondhand accounts.
