Christoph Zarits Elected New Leader of ÖVP Burgenland

Sat 26th Apr, 2025

On April 26, 2025, Christoph Zarits was officially elected as the new leader of the ÖVP Burgenland during a session of the state party board. Bernd Strobl, who was initially seen as Zarits' contender, has taken on the role of club chairman. This agreement between Zarits and Strobl was unanimously endorsed by the board following their discussions. They replace Christian Sagartz in their respective positions.

Zarits, although not a member of the state parliament, will serve as the head of the parliamentary club, which does not come with a salary. Looking ahead, the party aims to regain public trust and develop new policy initiatives, with Zarits announcing plans for a tour across all districts and the formulation of a new party program to be presented at the party congress later this year.

Zarits emphasized the importance of collaboration, stating that he and Strobl have worked closely to align their visions for the party's future. Their shared goal is to put the ÖVP back on a successful path. Zarits expressed confidence in Strobl, highlighting him as a reliable ally in their efforts.

Strobl, known for his assertive stance, affirmed his commitment to making the concerns of the ÖVP more prominent and acknowledged the challenges faced by the party following a disappointing electoral performance in January. Zarits admitted that improvements are necessary, stating that the party must work to become stronger and more representative in government.

Regarding ongoing discussions about the proposed takeover of the waste management association by the state, both leaders stressed the need for sustainable solutions, emphasizing that the decision will ultimately rest with the 70 ÖVP mayors rather than Zarits as the new party leader.

On the same day, the board did not finalize the appointment of a successor for Patrik Fazekas, the party's former secretary, indicating that this is a critical decision that requires careful consideration.

As the meeting concluded, outgoing leader Sagartz expressed gratitude to his team for their support over the past five years, describing the transition as a positive beginning for the party. In response, FPÖ club chairman Norbert Hofer extended an offer of cooperation to Strobl, while urging the new ÖVP leadership to reject any plans regarding the waste management association.
