Two Christian Independent Schools in Umeå Ordered to Close Due to Major Deficiencies

The Swedish Schools Inspectorate has decided to shut down two Christian independent schools in Umeå following extensive investigations that revealed significant shortcomings in their operations. The schools, Mariaskolan and Hannaskolan, are both managed by the Umeå Christian School Association. Authorities cited a range of issues, including inadequate facilities, financial mismanagement, and concerns about student welfare and educational standards.

During 2024, the Schools Inspectorate conducted a thorough review of Mariaskolan, raising concerns about the scientific foundation of the teaching provided. Instances were observed where lessons included the literal teaching of biblical events, such as the flood, as historical facts. Inspectors noted that educators at the school sometimes presented religious stories as equivalent alternatives to scientific explanations, rather than maintaining a clear distinction between science and faith-based perspectives. The school leadership was reminded of the requirement for all teaching in Swedish schools to be based on scientific knowledge and proven experience.

In its most recent follow-up inspection, the agency found that while progress had been made in terms of aligning instruction with scientific principles and reducing confessional influences, other critical deficiencies persisted. Mariaskolan was found to lack essential facilities required for practical subjects, including woodworking, home economics, and chemistry. This absence hindered the school's ability to deliver a complete curriculum as mandated by national standards.

Financial oversight was also identified as a significant problem. The board of Mariaskolan had failed to pay occupational pension contributions for 30 employees over a period of nearly four years, from May 2021 to March 2025. The Inspectorate concluded that the school's strained financial situation prevented it from addressing previously identified shortcomings, further compromising the quality of education provided.

Separately, the Schools Inspectorate decided to close Hannaskolan, another primary school run by the same association, after identifying both serious and widespread deficiencies. Investigators found that students at Hannaskolan were exposed to an unsafe school environment, with reports of frequent altercations, conflicts, and instances of harassment. The agency determined that the school was unable to guarantee students the security and well-being required by Swedish education law.

After the closure decisions were announced, the leadership of Hannaskolan released a statement expressing strong dismay and indicating their intention to appeal the decision. They asserted their belief that the school had sufficient grounds to challenge the Inspectorate's findings.

According to the local education authority in Umeå, approximately 70 students are currently enrolled at Hannaskolan. The municipality has confirmed that affected students will have the option to apply for places at municipal schools or other independent schools in the area. The school closures have prompted local authorities to coordinate support for students and families during the transition period.

The Swedish Schools Inspectorate continues to monitor compliance with national education standards across all schools, focusing on both the quality of instruction and the safeguarding of students' welfare. The decisions regarding Mariaskolan and Hannaskolan highlight the agency's commitment to upholding rigorous standards and ensuring that all educational institutions provide a safe and scientifically sound learning environment.
