In a significant development for Austrian skiing, the Austrian Ski Federation (ÖSV) has announced the appointment of Christian Mitter as the new Sports Director for Alpine skiing. Mitter, who previously served as the head coach for the Norwegian men's ski team, has a wealth of experience, including a prior tenure as head coach for the ÖSV women's team from 2019 to 2022. Most recently, he has been involved with the technical team of the Norwegian men's squad.
Mitter succeeds Herbert Mandl, who will focus on establishing an alpine training center in St. Christoph at Arlberg. Currently in Scandinavia, Mitter is set to be introduced at a media event in Innsbruck next Wednesday. ÖSV Sports Director Mario Stecher expressed gratitude for Mandl's contributions, noting his pivotal role in the successful home World Championships held in Saalbach. Mandl's new responsibilities will carry strategic significance as he works to develop the alpine center.
Stecher highlighted the advantages Mitter will have by stepping into his role mid-season, allowing him to take charge and influence the upcoming Olympic cycle significantly. The sports director also acknowledged the Norwegian Ski Federation's cooperative approach regarding Mitter's transfer.
Mandl, reflecting on his experience over the past three years leading the alpine division, expressed excitement about his new role. He noted that the Ski Austria Academy will celebrate its centennial in the upcoming winter season, presenting an opportunity for fresh initiatives. Mandl, who previously served as the Academy's managing director from 2013 to 2022, emphasized his commitment to nurturing young talent.
His vision includes transforming St. Christoph into a leading center for talent identification and development. Additionally, he looks forward to collaborating on a bid for the FIS Alpine Ski World Championships planned for either 2033 or 2035.
Christian Scherer, the ÖSV General Secretary, described the planned national and international speed training camps as a strong political statement in sports. He elaborated on the Academy's strategic shift towards enhanced support for youth and talent development, aiming to reposition this long-standing institution. The goal is to establish the Academy not only as a training facility but as a vibrant community hub for the passionate skiing families of Austria.
