Carinthia Authorities Halt New Admissions at SOS Children's Village Moosburg

Tue 23rd Dec, 2025

The regional government of Carinthia has imposed a temporary suspension on new admissions to the SOS Children's Village in Moosburg. This decision follows concerns raised by the responsible government department regarding insufficient cooperation and transparency from the facility's operating organization, according to official statements.

The Carinthian authorities reported delays in the provision of requested documentation, including records related to 19 children who had previously reported experiences of violence to the victim protection commission. This lack of timely information has prompted the government to take precautionary measures, resulting in the admission freeze at the Moosburg location.

Despite the administrative concerns, a recent inspection by specialist supervisory officials did not identify any deficiencies in the current care or welfare provided to children and adolescents residing at the facility. The government emphasized that, at present, there is no justification for transferring children from the Moosburg center to alternative care homes. Existing residents will continue to receive care as usual while the situation is monitored and assessed further.

In response to the government's actions, representatives of the SOS Children's Village organization stated they could not comprehend the allegations of lacking cooperation. The organization expressed its intention to clarify the situation and work towards resolving any misunderstandings with the authorities.

The SOS Children's Village Moosburg is one of several such institutions in Austria dedicated to the care of children and young people who are unable to live with their families. The facility has previously been the subject of public scrutiny and organizational reforms following broader inquiries into historical cases of abuse within similar institutions.

This recent development is part of a broader context of oversight and reform efforts affecting child welfare organizations throughout Austria. Regional governments continue to increase scrutiny on such institutions to ensure compliance with child protection standards and the well-being of minors in care.

The Carinthian government stated that the current suspension will remain in place until the outstanding documentation is provided and any concerns regarding transparency are fully addressed. Officials reassured that the welfare of the children at the Moosburg facility remains a top priority during this review process.
