Gipsy Kings: "Music Is a Natural Way of Life"

Burgenland Energie has launched the region's first dedicated energy transition station in the town of Apetlon, marking a significant step in the area's move towards sustainability. The new hub serves as a multifunctional facility, primarily offering an electric bicycle charging station alongside a rest area equipped with amenities for cyclists and visitors.
This initiative forms part of a broader transformation in Apetlon, which has emerged as a model municipality for energy independence and climate protection within Burgenland. Recent efforts have resulted in Apetlon generating around 70 percent of its electricity and heat needs locally, primarily through solar and wind technologies. Key components underpinning this achievement include rooftop photovoltaic systems, battery storage units, heat pumps, and active participation in regional energy communities.
The opening ceremony was attended by local officials, educators, parents, and students, reflecting the community-driven nature of this transition. The town's leadership emphasized a cross-party commitment to renewable energy, with the goal of securing long-term environmental and economic benefits for future generations. Over the past several months, numerous public buildings in Apetlon have been fitted with photovoltaic panels, while battery systems have been installed to store surplus solar power for use during low sunlight periods.
Further upgrades include the installation of energy-efficient LED floodlights at the community's football field, supporting local sports while reducing energy consumption. Plans are underway to equip selected streets with modern LED lighting and to expand the municipality's electric vehicle charging infrastructure.
Apetlon's integration into Europe's largest energy community, known as the Fanclub Burgenland Energieunabhängig, further strengthens its access to renewable energy sources. The community benefits from the output of regional wind and photovoltaic installations, which supplement the energy produced locally.
Education and youth engagement are central to these developments. The local primary school has become a focal point for energy transition efforts, now operating with its own photovoltaic system and relying on a heat pump for heating, eliminating the need for gas. This transformation has made the school a showcase for sustainable practices and energy autonomy within the municipality.
The new energy transition station, located in one of Austria's most popular cycling regions, provides a convenient and accessible charging option for e-bikes. The facility includes a photovoltaic-powered charging station, a battery storage system, and a sheltered area for rest and refreshments. This infrastructure not only supports environmentally friendly mobility but also offers cyclists an opportunity to recharge before continuing their journey to local attractions such as the Langen Lacke, the country's lowest geographical point.
With these combined initiatives, Apetlon demonstrates a comprehensive approach to energy transition, blending technological upgrades, community participation, and educational integration. The new hub is expected to serve as a model for similar projects throughout Burgenland and beyond, highlighting the practical benefits of renewable energy adoption at the municipal level.
