Authorities in Rhode Island have reported that a shooting incident on the Brown University campus has resulted in at least two fatalities and several injuries. The event unfolded on Saturday afternoon, prompting immediate emergency alerts to students and staff, urging them to secure themselves indoors and remain silent until further notice.
The incident took place inside an academic building frequently used by physics and engineering students. According to city officials in Providence, all individuals affected by the shooting were university students. Emergency services quickly responded to the scene, transporting at least nine people with gunshot wounds to local hospitals. Medical personnel have described the condition of one of the injured as critical, while six others are considered in critical but stable condition. Two additional victims are reported to be in stable condition.
During the time of the attack, Brown University was conducting final examinations for the autumn term, which meant the building's main entrances were unlocked to accommodate student access. Interior doors, however, required authorized entry. The timing and accessibility of the building are under review as part of the ongoing investigation.
Eyewitness accounts from students indicate a rapid escalation of the situation, with campus-wide messages instructing immediate lockdown procedures. Many students quickly contacted their families to confirm their safety and to check on friends, describing a sense of disbelief as events unfolded.
In response to the shooting, law enforcement agencies, including approximately 400 officers and federal agents from the FBI, were deployed to the area surrounding Brown University. Authorities issued warnings to the public to avoid the vicinity while an extensive search for the suspected perpetrator was underway. Surveillance footage released by investigators depicts a man, believed to be in his thirties, dressed in a black hooded sweatshirt, moving quickly near the campus shortly after the shooting.
By the following day, Providence police announced the apprehension of a suspect believed to be connected to the incident. The investigation remains ongoing, with law enforcement working to establish the motive behind the attack and to ensure the safety of the university community.
Brown University, a prestigious Ivy League institution with an enrollment of approximately 11,000 students, has been deeply affected by the tragedy. The shooting adds to a growing number of similar incidents across the United States, with more than 70 school shootings reported nationwide this year.
Federal authorities continue to assist local law enforcement, and university officials have stated that support services are being provided to students and staff impacted by the incident. The university has expressed its commitment to reviewing campus security measures and cooperating fully with the ongoing law enforcement efforts.
