Baden District Reports Highest Bicycle Theft Rates in 2024

A recent report indicates a notable decline in bicycle thefts across Lower Austria in 2024, although the figures remain higher than pre-pandemic levels. In total, 2,673 bicycles were reported stolen in the region last year, marking a decrease of 74 incidents compared to 2023, yet an increase of 529 from 2022. The statistics reveal that theft rates have improved since 2019, when 3,093 bicycles were reported stolen, and significantly from 2014, which saw 4,081 thefts.

Within Lower Austria, the Baden district ranked highest for bicycle thefts, with 292 reported incidents. Following Baden were the Mödling district with 266 thefts and the city of St. Pölten with 223. The Zwettl district recorded the lowest number of thefts at just nine, with Waidhofen/Thaya and Lilienfeld districts following closely behind with ten and twelve reported thefts, respectively.

Christian Gratzer, a spokesperson for the VCÖ, emphasized the importance of secure bicycle parking spaces to prevent theft, particularly in high-traffic areas such as shopping streets, recreational facilities, sports complexes, universities, and schools. As bicycles serve as a popular means of transport to public transit, the availability of safe parking near train stations and bus stops is also crucial.

Despite the need for more bicycle parking facilities, the VCÖ plans to collaborate with the community to identify specific locations where such facilities are lacking. Residents can submit their observations and issues related to bicycle traffic through the VCÖ's website until May 4.

Secure parking options in residential complexes are equally important. To reduce the risk of theft, the VCÖ recommends that individuals lock their bicycles even for brief stops. It is advisable to secure the frame to a bicycle rack with a lock, as only locking the front wheel increases the risk of the frame being stolen. Additionally, replacing quick-release mechanisms on saddles and front wheels with security screws and using high-quality locks are recommended.

In 2024, 353 bicycle thefts were resolved, resulting in a low clearance rate of just 13.2 percent. The VCÖ suggests that individuals note down their bicycle's frame number, which aids in returning recovered bicycles to their rightful owners. For high-value or newer bicycles, investing in theft insurance is also advisable.
