The recent victory of Andrej Babis in the Czech Republic raises questions about the future political landscape of the European Union and NATO, particularly in relation to his associations with leaders like Hungary's Viktor Orbán and Slovakia's Robert Fico.
While Orbán and Fico celebrated Babis's election win, proclaiming that 'truth has triumphed,' concerns linger about whether Babis will align with their populist agendas. His party, ANO, shares Orbán's and Fico's hardline stance on immigration and environmental regulations, suggesting potential challenges to EU policies in these areas.
However, Babis has distanced himself from pro-Russian sentiments, emphasizing that he is 'clearly for Europe and NATO.' He has repeatedly stated that he has never met with Russian President Vladimir Putin, contrasting himself with his right-wing allies.
One significant concern for Ukraine is Babis's commitment to end a Czech initiative that supplies artillery ammunition to the country, although he is expected to maintain sanctions against Russia.
To form a stable government, Babis will need to collaborate with more extreme right-wing parties. ANO is projected to secure around 80 seats in parliament but will require at least 20 additional seats for a majority. The parties he is likely to partner with include the far-right SPD, which has a history of employing racism in its campaigns, and another party focused solely on halting climate initiatives.
In terms of climate and immigration policies, Babis may find common ground with these parties. Nevertheless, the SPD's position on EU membership and its interpretation of the Ukraine conflict align closely with Russian state propaganda.
Babis's leadership could pose challenges for the EU, especially regarding its green agenda aimed at achieving climate neutrality by 2050. Still, there is hope in Brussels that he may override the more extreme views of his coalition partners.
Throughout Europe, parties like Babis's are gaining traction, as evidenced by similar movements in the UK, Poland, and Italy. Voter resistance to immigration and green policies appears to be a unifying factor driving support for these parties.
However, open support for Russia's actions in Ukraine does not seem to resonate with the electorate in many European nations. Countries like Romania have recently elected liberal candidates, and traditional conservative parties in Germany have managed to maintain a government despite the rise of the far-right AFD.
The far-right parties across Europe have begun to organize themselves and hold meetings to discuss their agendas, although they remain divided, particularly regarding Russia and the Ukraine conflict. Babis, who once identified as a liberal, has shifted further right during his time in opposition.
