Chemical Industry Employers Challenge Legality of Ongoing Strikes

The Chemical Industry Association of Austria has raised concerns about the legality of current strike actions taking place at the Linz chemical park. Employers assert that, under the existing collective bargaining agreement, such industrial actions lack legal justification, as both unions and workers' representatives are obligated to uphold industrial peace while an active agreement remains in place.

Representatives for the employers' association emphasized that any financial losses suffered by member companies as a result of the strikes will be met with appropriate legal measures. The association has indicated it will provide comprehensive support to affected businesses to ensure their interests are protected through the necessary legal channels.

Amid ongoing labor disputes, employers have called for union negotiators to return to the bargaining table. The association states that several additional negotiation dates have been proposed by the employers, starting from the upcoming weekend and continuing on each working day throughout the following week. However, according to the association, union representatives were only available to meet from June 11 onward, leading to a delay in further discussions.

They highlight the challenging economic backdrop facing the chemical sector, pointing to the loss of 600 jobs in the final quarter of 2025 and a significant rise in annual additional costs--estimated at 500 million euros--compared with recent wage settlements in Germany. The next round of collective bargaining talks is scheduled for June 11.
