Austria Braces for Unsettled Weather and Cooler Temperatures Midweek

Sun 7th Jun, 2026

Weather conditions across Austria are set to become increasingly changeable and unsettled in the coming week, as forecasted by Geosphere Austria. The start of the week will see a brief spell of sunny weather on Monday morning, but this will give way to the development of cumulus clouds during the day, leading to widespread thunderstorms--especially across mountainous regions and the south of the country. By evening, a zone of cloud cover and light rain associated with a disturbance will advance into western Austria.

Wind conditions at the beginning of the week are expected to remain generally light to moderate. However, areas near thunderstorms could experience strong gusts. Early morning temperatures are forecast to range from 9 to 16 degrees Celsius, while daytime highs are predicted between 24 and 30 degrees Celsius.

Significant Weather Disturbance Approaching

A notable disturbance is projected to arrive in western Austria overnight from Monday to Tuesday, bringing periods of heavy rain showers. In the eastern regions, conditions are likely to remain partly sunny in advance of the disturbance, though the risk of thunderstorms will rise quickly as the day progresses. Some regions may face the threat of severe storms. Winds will shift to moderate to brisk from the west as the disturbance moves through. Morning temperatures are expected between 9 and 18 degrees Celsius, with highs ranging from 19 degrees in the west up to 29 degrees in the east.

By Wednesday, the disturbance will extend across Austria, resulting in widespread cloud cover and rainfall. The heaviest precipitation is anticipated between the Zillertal Alps and the Niedere Tauern, as well as in East Tyrol and Upper Carinthia. Snow levels in the northern Alps are expected to drop to around 1,800 meters above sea level. The far eastern and southeastern areas are likely to remain mostly dry during the day. Winds in the east will come from the northwest and reach moderate strength, while other regions will see lighter winds. Early temperatures are set to drop to between 6 and 18 degrees Celsius, and daytime highs will cool to between 14 and 21 degrees Celsius.

Transition to Mixed Weather Later in the Week

Following the passage of the disturbance, Thursday will bring a mix of sunshine and cumulus clouds to many parts of Austria. The north and east will continue to see occasional showers as moderate to brisk winds blow in from the west to northwest. Morning temperatures will fall within the 5 to 12 degrees Celsius range, and daytime highs are expected between 16 and 23 degrees Celsius.

On Friday, another area of dense cloud cover is forecast to move in from the northwest, although sunny spells will dominate in most regions. Winds will remain light to moderate from the west. Morning temperatures are predicted to be between 5 and 13 degrees Celsius, with maximum temperatures during the day ranging from 17 to 24 degrees Celsius.

This sequence of changing weather patterns marks a clear transition to cooler and less stable conditions across Austria, with significant rainfall and the potential for thunderstorms particularly pronounced in the early part of the week, followed by a gradual return to more settled, though still variable, weather by the weekend.
