Gipsy Kings: "Music Is a Natural Way of Life"

The former head of Austria's State Security and Intelligence Service (DSN), Omar Haijawi-Pirchner, has raised concerns about increasing security threats facing the country. After stepping down from his role earlier this year, Haijawi-Pirchner now advises businesses and executives on security matters and has shared his insights on current challenges impacting Austria's public safety and corporate environments.
During his tenure at the DSN, Haijawi-Pirchner observed that espionage continues to pose significant risks to Austria. However, he identifies Islamist extremism as the most pressing threat to national security at present. The recent terrorist attack in Berlin, which resulted in casualties, underscores the ongoing dangers posed by extremist networks. Security authorities have been alerting the public to these risks for years and anticipate that countering such threats will remain a priority in the near future.
Haijawi-Pirchner stresses that addressing these dangers is not solely the responsibility of law enforcement agencies. He suggests that society as a whole must engage in preventive efforts to counter radicalization and extremism. The influence of political Islam, particularly organizations such as the Muslim Brotherhood, is of particular concern. According to Haijawi-Pirchner, these groups have established a strong presence in Austria, skillfully integrating into political and social circles, and in some cases, influencing state institutions.
He notes that legal mechanisms for tracking and countering these organizations are limited and not always fully utilized. Some organizations and associations linked to the Muslim Brotherhood are reportedly involved in generating propaganda within Austria, which is then disseminated abroad to destabilize democratic systems. Haijawi-Pirchner emphasizes the need for vigilance and decisive action to prevent such groups from undermining Austrian society and democratic values.
The broader issue of insufficient integration in urban areas is also mentioned as a contributing factor to the growth of extremist ideologies. Haijawi-Pirchner points out that cooperation between certain state entities and associations with extremist connections remains a concern, as does the risk of these organizations fostering instability through their networks and activities.
In his current advisory role, Haijawi-Pirchner works with business leaders to help them recognize signs of radicalization and extremism among employees and in their professional environments. He highlights the potential risks posed by all forms of extremism, including Islamist, right-wing, and left-wing ideologies. For example, if an employee were to misuse company resources for an attack, this could result in significant reputational and operational harm to the organization.
He recommends that companies implement measures to detect early warning signs, such as noticeable changes in an employee's appearance or the adoption of specific symbols associated with extremist groups. Training executives to identify and respond to these indicators is part of comprehensive risk management. Furthermore, Haijawi-Pirchner advises on security protocols for business travel, especially regarding the use of electronic devices and the handling of sensitive information abroad, due to the risk of industrial espionage and targeted attacks.
Current economic challenges are also having a direct impact on security. Haijawi-Pirchner observes that business leaders, particularly those in critical infrastructure sectors, are increasingly subject to online harassment and threats. Economic pressures have contributed to a resurgence of certain criminal activities, including extortion attempts, which had previously declined. In addition to extremism and criminal activity, businesses face ongoing challenges from disinformation campaigns, sabotage, and organized crime.
Haijawi-Pirchner's assessment highlights the complex and evolving security environment in Austria, emphasizing the need for coordinated efforts by both governmental and private sectors to safeguard democratic institutions and public safety.
