Austria Braces for Intense Heatwave Amid Unstable Weather

Sun 14th Jun, 2026

A significant rise in temperatures is expected to affect Austria in the coming week, as meteorologists forecast a heatwave developing by midweek. While the early part of the week is predicted to remain variable, the weather pattern will shift sharply from Wednesday onward, with temperatures surpassing 30 degrees Celsius in many regions.

According to experts from Geosphere Austria, the temperature increase will be noticeable across the country. Urban areas, in particular, could face even more extreme conditions, with forecasts suggesting that highs may reach up to 35 degrees Celsius by Friday. This period of elevated temperatures will be accompanied by intermittent thunderstorms, which are typical during such weather transitions.

Monday: Intermittent Sunshine and Isolated Showers

The week will begin with a mix of sun and scattered clouds. Most regions are expected to experience sunny intervals on Monday, although the first half of the day may bring light rain showers, especially in the northern parts and central Austria. During the afternoon, cumulus clouds are likely to develop, particularly in the southeast, leading to a possibility of isolated rain showers and some thunderstorm cells. Early morning temperatures are projected to be between 8 and 16 degrees Celsius, with daytime highs ranging from 19 to 25 degrees Celsius.

Tuesday: Mostly Clear with Increasing Cloud Cover

Tuesday is forecast to offer predominantly pleasant and sunny conditions, especially in the morning hours. However, more extensive cloud formations will move in from the west during the afternoon, which may temporarily reduce sunshine and bring sporadic rainfall to mountainous regions. Morning temperatures are expected to be between 7 and 15 degrees Celsius, while afternoon highs will likely reach 21 to 27 degrees Celsius.

Wednesday: Onset of Heatwave and Unstable Conditions

Midweek weather will be influenced by atmospheric low pressure at higher altitudes, resulting in unstable and thunderstorm-prone conditions during the first half of Wednesday. All regions will be affected by showers and potential thunderstorms until the afternoon. Toward the evening, the weather is expected to stabilize, with clearing skies and several hours of sunshine anticipated across Austria. Morning temperatures will range from 10 to 17 degrees Celsius, and maximum temperatures will rise to between 26 and 30 degrees Celsius.

Thursday: High Pressure Brings Widespread Sunlight

As high pressure systems establish themselves over Central Europe, Thursday is set to begin with widespread sunshine. Nevertheless, cumulus clouds will build up, particularly over mountainous and hilly areas, leading to the development of heat-induced thunderstorms as the day progresses. The majority of precipitation will be concentrated in the southern and southeastern regions. Minimum temperatures are forecast to be between 13 and 21 degrees Celsius, and daytime temperatures could soar to between 26 and 33 degrees Celsius.

Friday: Peak Temperatures Expected in Urban Areas

The end of the week will see the persistence of high-pressure conditions, maintaining sunny and hot weather across Austria. While isolated heat thunderstorms may occur in the west and south of the main Alpine ridge, the northern and eastern regions are likely to remain mostly dry. Early morning temperatures will stay within the range of 15 to 22 degrees Celsius, and daytime highs are predicted to peak at around 35 degrees Celsius, particularly in cities and urban environments.

This upcoming heatwave highlights the ongoing pattern of increasingly hot and dry weather conditions experienced in Austria in recent years. Meteorological records have shown a trend toward higher temperatures and more frequent extreme weather events, drawing attention to broader climatic changes affecting the region.
