Significant Rise in Mortality Linked to Early July Heatwave in Austria

Austria experienced a notable surge in mortality rates during the intense heatwave at the beginning of July, according to newly released data from Statistik Austria. The statistical report highlights a marked increase in deaths during the first week of July, a period characterized by record-breaking temperatures, including Vienna's first-ever 40°C reading.

During calendar week 27, the official data recorded 1,817 deaths, representing an increase of 18.8% compared to the average for the same week over the previous three years (2023-2025), and an even higher 29% rise compared to the five-year average. Of the total deaths, 1,586 occurred in individuals aged 65 and older, while 231 were among those under 65.

While these figures reflect overall mortality, they do not directly attribute deaths to heat exposure. Determining the exact number of heat-related fatalities remains complex, as 'heat' is rarely listed as a direct cause of death in official documentation. Instead, elevated temperatures can exacerbate pre-existing conditions, particularly cardiovascular and respiratory illnesses, leading to increased mortality during extreme heat events. The Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES) employs statistical models to estimate the number of deaths attributable to high temperatures. According to AGES, the summer period from June to September in the previous year saw an estimated 449 heat-related deaths (with an uncertainty range between 239 and 611). The notably hotter summer of 2024 recorded a significantly higher estimate of 989 heat-related deaths (uncertainty interval: 607 to 1,355), marking the highest figure since 2017.

The statistical link between high temperatures and mortality is well established, with data consistently showing an uptick in deaths during periods of extreme heat. The most recent reporting week, calendar week 27, recorded the highest mortality rate for that week in 27 years. Only one other summer week, week 29 in 2022, saw more deaths since 2000. Even in the preceding week (week 26), mortality figures were elevated, with 1,675 deaths reported--above the typical seasonal average.

The impact was especially pronounced among older populations. For those aged 65 and above, week 27 saw 1,586 deaths compared to the long-term average of 1,163, amounting to a 36% increase. This demographic is particularly vulnerable to the adverse health effects of high temperatures, underscoring the heightened risk faced by elderly individuals during heatwaves.

Experts emphasize the importance of preventive measures and public awareness to reduce heat-related health risks, especially for at-risk groups such as the elderly and those with pre-existing medical conditions. While authorities continue to monitor and analyze mortality trends, the data underscores the significant impact that extreme weather events can have on public health in Austria.
