Attempted Murder Charges After 160-Kilometer Police Chase on Austrian Motorways

An incident involving a high-speed police pursuit across major Austrian motorways has resulted in an attempted murder charge against a driver who allegedly endangered several lives, including that of a construction worker. The chase began when the suspect, driving a passenger vehicle, disregarded a complete road closure enforced by the police on the Welser Autobahn (A25) near the Wels terminal, where maintenance work was underway.

Authorities report that the driver bypassed the police blockade and entered the restricted construction area, where several workers were present. According to investigators, the suspect accelerated towards one of the workers at approximately 150 km/h. The worker was able to evade harm at the last moment, alerted by police sirens, and managed to leap out of the way, narrowly avoiding a potentially fatal collision.

The chase continued as the suspect exited the construction zone, prompting a coordinated response by multiple police vehicles. The pursuit spanned approximately 160 kilometers, continuing from the A25 onto the Westautobahn (A1) and extending into Lower Austria. Throughout the pursuit, the suspect reportedly attempted to force police vehicles off the road on several occasions, endangering not only the officers but also other road users whose identities remain unknown.

In total, nine police officers participated in the high-speed pursuit. The actions of the suspect resulted in significant property damage, with the total cost to police vehicles exceeding 25,000 euros. The authorities have stated that the suspect did not attempt to brake or avoid collisions during the critical moments of the incident, which contributed to the severity of the charges now being pursued.

The prosecutor's office in Wels has classified the incident as an attempted murder, particularly due to the direct threat posed to the construction worker. Additional charges have been filed, including resisting law enforcement, multiple counts of attempted grievous bodily harm, multiple counts of coercion, and criminal property damage. The investigation further alleges that the suspect repeatedly tried to endanger both police officers and uninvolved traffic participants during the chase.

Following the conclusion of the pursuit in the area of Altlengbach, the suspect was apprehended and has since been held in pre-trial detention. The case has attracted public attention due to the combination of reckless driving, disregard for police orders, and the serious risk posed to human life in a work zone. Police and prosecutors have emphasized the importance of adhering to road closures and respecting traffic enforcement to prevent similar dangerous incidents in the future.
