In a recent update, Apple has ceased allowing users to downgrade from iOS 26 back to iOS 18.6.2, just one week after the latest version was released. This move prevents users who have upgraded from reverting to the previous operating system, particularly those who may not prefer the newly introduced Liquid-Glass design.
This is a common practice for Apple, which typically disables the option to install older versions of its software shortly after a new update is rolled out. This policy serves as a security measure, helping to mitigate the risks associated with potentially flawed and outdated software versions. When users attempt to downgrade, their devices check with Apple's servers to validate the software's authenticity through digital signatures. This system also helps Apple combat unauthorized software modifications, often referred to as jailbreaking, which exploit vulnerabilities in older versions of the operating system.
While downgrading to older versions is theoretically possible, the process is not user-friendly. Users must manually download the previous version in the form of an IPSW file and then install it using a Mac or PC via USB connection. During beta testing phases, downgrading can serve as a last resort for users experiencing significant issues with the beta version. However, this process limits users to restoring only the backups they made before updating to the beta version.
Alongside the release of iOS 18.6.2, Apple has also discontinued the signing of iPadOS 18.6.2 and tvOS 18.6. This is consistent with the company's typical timeline, which usually involves a one-week waiting period before implementing such changes.
Currently, iOS 18.7 remains available for specific older devices, primarily to provide security updates. However, users with devices that support iOS 26 will not find compatible IPSW files for iOS 18.7 to facilitate a downgrade.
