The expansion of the Pyhrn Highway (A9) in Styria is set to enter the planning phase, as announced by Federal Minister Peter Hanke and the Styrian state government. The officials have reached a mutual understanding regarding the further development of the highway in the southern economic region of Graz. The project aims to address increasing traffic challenges by adding a third lane.
Hanke emphasized the necessity of this expansion, stating that despite substantial investments in rail infrastructure, road traffic in southern Graz continues to rise. He warned that without targeted measures, traffic jams and diversions into local towns could become problematic. The initiation of planning is expected to lay the groundwork for a structured project development process.
ASFINAG, the Austrian motorway operator, has been assigned to further the project design and elaboration, indicating that the initiative is still in its early stages. A comprehensive evaluation will follow the initial planning.
Joachim Schnabel, the transport spokesperson for the ÖVP, expressed satisfaction with the development, highlighting that years of advocacy and discussions have led to this moment. He noted that the planning phase will soon prompt ASFINAG to take concrete steps to enhance the efficiency of the A9 between Graz-West and Wildon. According to Schnabel, the addition of a third lane is a critical measure to alleviate congestion and redirect traffic back onto the highway from local roads.
The Styrian SPÖ leader, Max Lercher, welcomed the decision, calling the A9 expansion one of the most significant infrastructure projects in Styria. He believes it will provide a much-needed boost to the regional economy and overall location.
However, the expansion has not been without its critics. The Styrian Greens have voiced concerns, questioning the allocation of funds for a third lane that may take years to complete. Sandra Krautwaschl, the club chairwoman, pointed out that while money is suddenly available for this highway expansion, it is lacking for much-needed cost-of-living assistance and essential railway expansions. She criticized the SPÖ and its infrastructure minister for adhering to outdated approaches.
The project for the three-lane expansion of the A9 between Graz-West and Wildon was previously halted in 2021 by then-Transport Minister Leonore Gewessler from the Green Party.
