A2 Motorway Near Graz Closed for Mur Bridge Removal Operations

Sat 6th Dec, 2025

The A2 motorway near Graz is set to experience a temporary closure in the direction of Klagenfurt to facilitate the dismantling of the old Mur Bridge. According to the Austrian motorway management company, Asfinag, the closure will commence on Saturday evening and continue until early Sunday morning. This measure is necessary to safely remove the now-redundant structure following the completion and recent opening of a new bridge in the area.

Preparation for the removal process has been underway since the new bridge was constructed ahead of schedule. The old Mur Bridge will be detached from its supporting pillars using three large cranes. Specialized vehicles will then transport the bridge sections to a decommissioned parking area nearby, where the structure will be cut into smaller pieces for further disposal or recycling.

During this operation, motorists traveling toward Klagenfurt are advised to plan for alternative routes and potential traffic delays. Traffic authorities have implemented signage and detours to minimize disruption, but temporary congestion is expected during the closure period. Asfinag has coordinated closely with local law enforcement and emergency services to ensure the safety of both workers and road users throughout the removal process.

The new Mur Bridge, which has been operational for several days, now handles the traffic flow that was previously supported by the old structure. The completion of the new bridge has significantly improved road safety and capacity along this heavily used section of the A2 motorway. The demolition of the old bridge is a critical step in the broader infrastructure redevelopment project for the region.

Following the removal of the old bridge, construction teams will proceed to build new support pillars at the site. These new supports are part of the next phase, which involves shifting the southern bridge onto the updated pillars using hydraulic jacks. This engineering process, known as a transverse slide, is scheduled for completion in June 2026. The staged approach allows for continuous traffic flow and minimizes long-term disruption to motorists.

Local residents and commuters have been informed in advance about the closure and anticipated construction activities. Asfinag has emphasized its commitment to maintaining clear communication with the public and providing timely updates on progress. The overall redevelopment aims to enhance the safety, reliability, and efficiency of one of Austria's key transit corridors.

Authorities encourage all drivers to follow posted detour instructions, exercise patience, and remain attentive to workers and temporary traffic regulations during the closure period. The removal of the old Mur Bridge marks a significant milestone in the ongoing modernization of Austria's motorway infrastructure, supporting both regional mobility and economic growth.
