Trump Advocates for Cooperative Approach in US-China Trade Dispute

In a recent statement, President Donald Trump emphasized a diplomatic approach to the ongoing trade conflict with China, expressing a desire for amicable negotiations. During a ceremony for the new head of the Securities and Exchange Commission, Trump indicated that the goal is to maintain a cordial relationship with China, stating that both nations should approach discussions with kindness.

Trump underscored that while a cooperative tone is essential, it is equally important for China to reach an agreement. He asserted that without a deal, China would struggle to engage effectively in trade with the United States. The President reiterated his position, asserting that if an agreement cannot be reached, the United States would dictate the terms of the deal, which he aims to be equitable for all parties involved. He expressed optimism that the process of reaching an agreement would progress swiftly.

Prior to Trump's remarks, White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt had indicated that the U.S. is making headway towards a potential trade deal with China. Leavitt revealed that Trump had recently communicated his intentions to her, highlighting the importance of transparency regarding the negotiations. She noted that there are currently 18 proposals from over 100 countries seeking trade agreements with the United States, and the administration is working to lay the groundwork for a deal with China.

Leavitt refrained from commenting on whether Trump has had direct discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping. However, Trump had expressed confidence earlier that week about the prospects of resolving the tariff dispute, stating that China had initiated contact with the U.S. government and that discussions had been productive.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also shared insights on the situation during a closed-door meeting with investors, suggesting that a de-escalation of tariffs could occur soon. He conveyed that maintaining current tariff levels is not sustainable and reaffirmed that Trump does not seek to isolate the United States economically. Earlier this month, the trade conflict was heightened when Trump imposed tariffs on numerous countries, although he later announced a temporary pause on these increases. Notably, special tariffs of up to 145% remain in effect specifically for China, prompting retaliatory measures from Beijing, which imposed tariffs of 125% on American goods.
