The Windkraft Simonsfeld company, based in Ernstbrunn, is taking significant steps to enhance sustainability through its latest project at Energiewende Platz 1. Known for its commitment to renewable energy, the company has recently completed an expansion of its headquarters, which was finalized in the autumn of 2024.
The new section of the building prominently features two primary materials: wood and clay. This design choice contrasts sharply with the existing structure, which is characterized by extensive glass and modern technology. The expansion incorporates a well-organized wooden framework that allows for adaptability in future modifications. Additionally, a robust rammed earth core houses essential service areas, contributing to a comfortable indoor climate through a modern energy strategy that includes active building components.
Energy solutions for the new building include geothermal heating and cooling sourced from eleven deep boreholes, while solar panels installed on the roof generate electricity to meet the building's operational needs. This renewable energy also powers electric vehicle charging stations located in the parking area.
Notably, the parking lot was designed with sustainability in mind; it is permeable, allowing rainwater to seep into the ground rather than being channeled into drainage systems. This follows several directives aimed at using eco-friendly, circular building materials and harnessing renewable energy.
In an effort to support local economies, the project emphasized the importance of using regional resources. The clay used in construction was extracted from the basement excavation, while the timber was sourced from local forests, and the stone flooring was obtained from nearby quarries. Instead of demolishing and rebuilding, the decision was made to expand the existing building with a two-story addition along the street, creating a cohesive environment that fosters collaboration and interaction.
Architect Jury Troy, who led the project, noted that the new structure is connected to the original building at two points, facilitating flow and circulation throughout the space. An interior courtyard was also created, serving as a communal area designed for interaction among employees.
Communication and collaboration are central to the philosophy of Windkraft Simonsfeld. The ground floor of the new building encompasses a reception area, several meeting rooms, and a kitchen where meals are prepared daily. A multifunctional event space capable of accommodating over 100 guests is also part of the design, with part of it being utilized as a dining hall.
The upper floor houses new workspaces for the company's 123 employees. Employee involvement in the planning process was prioritized, with a diverse user group contributing to discussions on the future workplace and defining the layout and environment of the new spaces. The design includes more communal and relaxation areas than previously available.
A dedicated parents' office with two workstations and a small area for children has also been established, making the new spaces, which are filled with natural light and create a pleasant atmosphere, highly welcomed by staff. The interior design features a tailored color scheme and materials for each room, including collaboration with an artist who specializes in dyeing natural materials.
The expansion project has received notable recognition, achieving a perfect score of 1000 points from Klimaaktiv Austria under the Gold Standard and being honored as Project of the Month. Furthermore, it has been shortlisted in the commercial category for the FIABCI Prix d'Excellence Austria 2025, with the award ceremony scheduled for April 10.
With the addition of the courtyard and a covered outdoor area along with southern terraces, a comprehensive workspace has emerged, reinforcing the company's commitment to sustainability. The headquarters stands as a testament to Windkraft Simonsfeld's corporate philosophy.
