Stockholm Exergi has announced the commencement of construction on one of the world's largest carbon capture and storage projects, utilizing the CATACARB® Enhanced Hot Potassium Carbonate (HPC) technology. The facility is projected to begin operations in 2028 and aims to capture approximately 800,000 tons of carbon dioxide annually.
As a key energy provider for over 800,000 residents in the Stockholm region, Stockholm Exergi generates heat and power through the combustion of wood and wood residues, including sawdust, branches, and tree crowns. While this method is sustainable, it also results in significant carbon dioxide emissions.
In collaboration with CATACARB since April 28, 2021, Stockholm Exergi is working closely with selected engineering firms to design the core carbon capture system. Although carbon capture from flue gases is a relatively novel application, CATACARB's technology has proven effective in over 200 licensed applications across 34 countries. The company leverages a comprehensive database developed over 60 years, which includes customized systems and ongoing operational data, to continually refine its designs and support for both new and existing clients.
The CATACARB technology encompasses both Basic HPC and Enhanced HPC designs, which utilize additives to improve efficiency, reduce capital and operational expenditures, and minimize spatial requirements.
The decision to adopt CATACARB's Enhanced HPC technology is significant not only for its financial advantages but also for its commitment to prioritizing health and environmental considerations. Unlike some competing technologies, this process does not produce carcinogenic byproducts. With support from the EU Innovation Fund and the Swedish government, Stockholm Exergi is paving a commendable path towards sustainable development, and CATACARB is proud to be a partner in this endeavor.
CATACARB's technology and support are applicable across various sectors that emit flue gases, including energy generation (such as combined heat and power, biomass, and waste-to-energy), as well as industries like steel, cement, pulp and paper, gas processing, refineries, and petrochemicals. CATACARB is owned and operated by Eickmeyer & Associates, Inc.
