Runoff Election Set for Romanian Presidency Between Simion and Dan

Mon 5th May, 2025

Romania is gearing up for a critical runoff election on May 18, which will see far-right candidate George Simion facing off against independent candidate Nicusor Dan, the mayor of Bucharest. Following the counting of over 97% of the votes, Simion secured a significant lead with 40.26% of the ballots cast, while Dan garnered 20.75%, surpassing Crin Antonescu, the candidate from the pro-European center-left coalition, who finished with 20.52%.

Antonescu, acknowledging the outcome, stated that the current results are unlikely to change and expressed gratitude to the three coalition parties for their support. The substantial lead held by Simion has raised eyebrows among political analysts, given that he only attained about 14% of the vote in the previous election held in November. Over the past few months, he has effectively more than doubled his support.

As the leading candidate, the 38-year-old Simion enters the final round of the presidential race as a clear favorite, with experts suggesting that the pro-European camp may struggle to counter his momentum. This election marks a rerun; Romania's highest court annulled the November election due to illegal interference from Russia, which led to the disqualification of the initial winner, the far-right and pro-Russian candidate Calin Georgescu. Following this, Simion has stepped into the spotlight as a frontrunner.

Simion has positioned himself against military aid for Ukraine, a neighboring country currently facing aggression from Russia. His stance aligns with his nationalistic and right-wing political platform, which has resonated with a significant portion of the electorate.

The upcoming election is vital not only for Romania's political landscape but also for its relationship with the European Union and its stance on regional security issues. Observers are keenly watching how the electorate responds to Simion's controversial policies and rhetoric in the final campaign stretch.
